U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn responds to lingerie photos

According to Politico, “the revelation of the two photos is the latest in a series of unflattering headlines for the freshman member of Congress in the run-up to his first re-election bid.” “Cawthorn is facing seven Republican challengers, all of whom believe he is vulnerable.”

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) of North Carolina responded to a report that showed him in lingerie by explaining the alleged context of the photos.

The photos were provided to Politico by “a person formerly close to Cawthorn and his campaign,” and were later corroborated by a second source who was also formerly close to the first-term lawmaker.

Cawthorn claimed that the photos were taken during a vacation cruise in response to the report.

“I guess the left thinks goofy vacation photos taken during a game on a cruise (taken a long time before I ran for Congress) will somehow harm me?” Cawthorn expressed himself on Twitter. “They’re running out of things to throw at me.”

Cawthorn sent a link to a blog post that appears to show Cawthorn wearing lingerie at an adults-only scavenger hunt on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

Last month, Cawthorn sparked outrage when he claimed that members of Congress had invited him to orgies and had used cocaine in his presence.

Cawthorn’s unfounded charges sparked a frenzy among House Republicans, prompting a meeting between Cawthorn and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

According to Axios, this was reported at the meeting:

Cawthorn admitted that some of his assertions were untrue and “exaggerated,” said McCarthy.

“I just told him he’d lost my trust and that he’d have to earn it back, and I lay out everything I found unworthy.” ‘You can’t do this again,’ you can’t just say. McCarthy stated, “I mean, he’s got a lot of members agitated.”
