Top Senate Dems pledge quick confirmation process for Biden SCOTUS nominee

Democratic leaders in the Senate wasted no time Wednesday in pledging a quick confirmation process for whomever President Joe Biden nominates to replace Justice Stephen Breyer on the Supreme Court.

News broke Wednesday that the 83-year-old Breyer plans to retire at the end of the Supreme Court’s current term. Breyer, the oldest current member of the court, is one of three sitting justices appointed by Democratic presidents.

Biden, for his part, has previously said he would nominate a black woman to the court, though it’s unclear who that will be.

Whomever Biden picks, Democratic leaders in the Senate seem to have already decided the president’s nominee will have their support.

“President Biden’s nominee will receive a prompt hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee, and will be considered and confirmed by the full United States Senate with all deliberate speed,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said in a statement.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois expressed similar sentiments.

“With this Supreme Court vacancy, President Biden has the opportunity to nominate someone who will bring diversity, experience, and an evenhanded approach to the administration of justice,” read a statement from Durbin, who, as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, will preside over the confirmation hearing for Biden’s nominee.

“I look forward to moving the President’s nominee expeditiously through the Committee.”

Democrats won’t have much room for error. The party currently controls 50 Senate seats, the exact number of votes needed to confirm a Supreme Court justice.

If all Senate Republicans stand united, Democrats won’t be able to lose a single vote and still hope to confirm Biden’s nominee.

Judicial Crisis Network President Carrie Severino said the left will demand a justice who supports its agenda.

“The Left bullied Justice Breyer into retirement and now it will demand a justice who rubber stamps its liberal political agenda. And that’s what the Democrats will give them, because they’re beholden to the dark money supporters who helped elect them,” she tweeted.
