Ocasio-Cortez floats impeachment for conservative SCOTUS justices who struck down Roe

Supreme Court justices who lie under oath during their confirmation hearings should face “consequences,” possibly including impeachment, democratic socialist New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggested Sunday.

Ocasio-Cortez’s comments came in the context of a discussion on NBC’s “Meet the Press” about the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision that struck down the so-called constitutional “right” to abortion.

Liberal politicians like Ocasio-Cortez have expressed particular outrage that Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh voted to overturn the 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade that effectively prevented states from banning abortion. During their respective confirmation hearings, Gorsuch called Roe “a precedent of the U.S. Supreme Court,” while Kavanaugh said it was an “important precedent,” NBC News reported.

Notably, despite facing allegations of misleading members of the Senate, no Supreme Court justices who were appointed by Republican presidents publicly pledged not to overturn Roe.

But Ocasio-Cortez still claimed that Gorsuch and Kavanaugh “lied.”

“They lied,” she said on “Meet the Press.”

“If we allow Supreme Court nominees to lie under oath and secure lifetime appointments to the highest court of the land and then issue without basis — if you read these opinions — issue without basis, rulings that deeply undermine the human and civil rights of the majority of Americans, we must see that through,” she added.

Ocasio-Cortez said there have to be “consequences” for such actions.

“There must be consequences for such a deeply destabilizing action and a hostile takeover of our democratic institutions. To allow that to stand is to allow it to happen,” she said.

“And what makes it particularly dangerous is that it sends a blaring signal to all future nominees that they can now lie to duly elected members of the United States Senate in order to secure Supreme Court confirmations and seats on the Supreme Court.”

The democratic socialist went on to claim that this is an “impeachable offense.”

“Do you think lying — do you think lying in a confirmation hearing is an impeachable offense?” host Chuck Todd asked.

“I believe so,” she replied. “I believe lying under oath is an impeachable offense.”
