Jethro Lazenby, eldest son of Nick Cave, dies at 30

Nick Cave’s son Jethro Lazenby died today at the age of 30 – seven years after his 15-year-old son Arthur died after falling off a cliff in Brighton.

Jethro, who lived in Melbourne, had been freed on bail two days before his death after being sentenced to prison for kneeing his mother in the face after a fight over smokes, leaving her ‘bruised and bleeding.’

“With much sadness, I can confirm that my son, Jethro, has passed away,” the musician stated in a statement. “We would be grateful for family privacy at this time.”

The Australian singer, best known as the vocalist of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, was first hit by tragedy in July 2015, when he died after falling 60ft from a cliff in Ovingdean, near Brighton.

The 15-year-old, who was Earl Cave’s twin and was described by his family as a “beautiful, happy, loving boy,” had been using the hallucinogenic drug LSD, according to an inquest.

In 1991, Jethro was born to his Melbourne-based model mother Beau Lazenby, who was dating Cave at the time. He mostly worked as a model, although he also took on several acting jobs.

After a magistrate ordered him to attend substance addiction treatment and prevent contact with her for two years, he was released on bail from Melbourne Remand Centre on Thursday. “I do say to you that it’s entirely in your best interests to participate with all support services that I’ve set up for you,” Magistrate Donna Bakos said.

“It’s very very important that your path to rehabilitation will be a much more positive one and therefore you will be less of a risk to the community at large and in particular to your mother.” Sean Ghattas, Jethro’s lawyer, said his client had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, which had impacted his judgment.

According to the BBC, Jethro was sentenced to prison in 2018 for a series of violent attacks on his then-girlfriend.

Cave also has two more kids, Luke, 30, and Earl, 21, from his first marriage to Brazilian journalist Viviane Carneiro and Susie Bick, whom he married in 1999.
