Former UFC star Cain Velasquez is facing attempted murder charges after supposedly shooting into the vehicle of an alleged pedophile during a car chase, the Daily Wire reported.
The incident occurred Monday in San Jose, California.
“Velasquez reportedly fired a gun into a vehicle carrying Harry Goularte, who is facing felony child molestation charges, according to the County of Santa Clara District Attorney’s office,” the Daily Wire reported.
“Also in the vehicle were two older relatives of Goularte, including Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender, who was shot in the arm by Velasquez.”
The alleged child molester reportedly assaulted a 4-year-old relative of the former UFC heavyweight champion.
“Velasquez began shooting at the victims at Cochran Road and Butterfield Boulevard in Morgan Hill around 3:00 p.m. Monday. Velasquez, driving a Ford truck, followed the victims’ Chevrolet Silverado truck, driven by Goularte’s stepfather,” a statement from the Santa Clara County Office of the District Attorney read.
“During the 11-mile, high speed chase through busy streets into San Jose, Velasquez rammed his truck into the Silverado and fired multiple rounds with his registered .40 handgun. A female passenger in the Silverado called 911 for help.
“Goularte was uninjured in the attack. Velasquez was stopped and arrested by Morgan Hill police near Madrone Avenue in San Jose.”
District Attorney Jeff Rosen condemned the alleged attack as vigilante violence.
“The sad tragedy is that Mr. Velasquez chose to take the law into his own hands, endangering the public and everyone in the truck,” Rosen said.
“This act of violence also causes more pain and suffering to his family.”
The 43-year-old Goularte was arraigned on Feb. 25 and released without bail over prosecutorial objections.
As part of the conditions of his release, he was supposed to remain under house arrest and not come within 100 yards of a child under the age of 14.
According to ESPN, the child Goularte allegedly assaulted said he was taken into the bathroom of a daycare center by Goularte, who touched his genitals and told him not to tell anyone. The child said it had happened “100 times” and that he’d seen other children go into the bathroom with Goularte, as well.
The district attorney’s statement said Goularte was on his way to get the electronic monitoring bracelet to monitor him while under house arrest when he was reportedly chased by Velasquez.
ESPN reported the former heavyweight champion now faces charges of “attempted murder; shooting at an occupied motor vehicle or aircraft; three counts of assault with a firearm; three counts of assault with a deadly weapon; willfully discharging a firearm from a vehicle; and carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony.”
