Five Oregon counties vote to join Idaho on Tuesday

Rural Oregonians have voted to secede from their state in an effort to become part of the state of Idaho, according to a report by Breitbart News

There were five counties that voted to remove themselves from Oregon and join Idaho on Tuesday, according to details offered by The Idaho Statesman

“Voters in Sherman, Lake, Grant, Baker and Malheur counties all voted for ballot measures that would lead to them becoming Idahoans,” the Statesman reported. “People in Union and Jefferson counties had already voted in favor during the November election. . .”

According to the publication, this was part of a project known as the “Greater Idaho” project, which would, in essence, move the border between the two states.

Moving the border accomplishes a few things, the most prevalent of which is allowing more conservative Oregonians to join a state that is closer to their political belief system.

This isn’t the first news to break about the project, according to Breitbart. The publication reported in April that a political action committee formed in 2019  was attempting to push for the redrawing.

“Petitions gathered by Move Oregon’s Border have forced the placement of ballot initiatives to change the border between Oregon and Idaho for consideration by voters in nine Oregon counties,” Breitbart reported at the time.

“Move Oregon’s Border continues to collect signatures in seven other counties where no vote has occurred yet: Curry, Josephine, Jackson, Klamath, Harney, Morrow, and Umatilla counties,” the group’s website states.

In a statement about the proposed change Move Oregon’s Border founder and president of Citizens for Greater Idaho Mike McCarter said “This election proves that rural Oregon wants out of Oregon. If Oregon really believes in liberal values such as self-determination, the Legislature won’t hold our counties captive against our will. If we’re allowed to vote for which government officials we want, we should be allowed to vote for which government we want as well.”
